Lapeer County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census the population was 87904. The Census Bureau estimated the population in 2009 to be 89974.1 According to the U.S. Census Bureau it is part of Metro Detroit. The county seat is Lapeer2. The county was created on September 18 1822 and was fully organized on February 2 1835. The name is an anglicization of the French la pierre which means "flint" or "flint stone."3 List of Michigan county name etymologies.

The Oakland County section of the Polly Ann Trail is a 14.2-mile long ribbon of crushed stone, packed soils and asphalt that meanders from downtown Lake Orion to the Lapeer County line at Boardman Road. From there the trail leads well into Lapeer County for another 20 miles through Dryden, Imlay City and Lum.

According to the 2000 census the county has a total area of 663.08 square miles (1717.4 km2) of which 654.20 square miles (1694.4 km2) (or 98.66%) is land and 8.88 square miles (23.0 km2) (or 1.34%) is water.4 Lapeer County's geography is very similar to Oakland County except Lapeer County is more rural. Lapeer is one of the five counties that form the peninsula projecting into Lake Huron known as the Thumb which in turn is a sub-region of the Flint/Tri-Cities.

As of the census5 of 2000 there were 87904 people 30729 households and 23876 families residing in the county. The population density was 134 people per square mile (52/km). There were 32732 housing units at an average density of 50 per square mile (19/km). The racial makeup of the county was 96.17% White 0.82% Black or African American 0.38% Native American 0.39% Asian 0.01% Pacific Islander 1.07% from other races and 1.16% from two or more races. 3.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 24.2% were of German 11.8% English 9.7% American 9.6% Irish and 9.4% Polish ancestry according to Census 2000. 95.9% spoke English and 2.6% Spanish as their first language.
